Introduction to the work of the Dangerous Goods office

Dangerous Goods packaging

PACKAGE CERTIFICATION

For over 30 years, the UK certification scheme for dangerous goods packaging has been operated on behalf of the Department for Transport by Pira International Ltd. From April 2007, responsibility for this work along with most of Pira's Dangerous Goods staff transferred to the Department's Vehicle Certification Agency, although the Office remains at the current premises in Leatherhead.

The office, now known as VCA-DG, is responsible for scrutinising package test reports submitted by UKAS accredited laboratories and issuing UN approval marks, which are recognised multi-modally throughout the world. In addition, the experienced staff provides technical advice on the dangerous goods regulations, particularly in relation to packaging and transport, to both the regulatory authorities and industry.

The Dangerous Goods office:

  • maintains records of all UN packaging approvals issued by the UK
  • advises on the use of UN packaging
  • offers a consultancy service on UK and international Road, Rail, Sea and Air transport regulations
  • runs bespoke training courses for companies - on their premises - on any aspect of the Dangerous Goods Regulations.

NOTE: VCA-DG consultancy and training services are offered to clients worldwide.
